A note about dogs and training.
There are many owners and dog trainers, even dog training schools, who see dog training as a straightforward job - however, this is only 'dog training' or puppy training in the truest sense.
Dog training and puppy training is more far reaching than you think. It involves the dog's behaviour - true - but also that of the owner, the family, the surroundings the dog or puppy finds itself being dog trained in and of course, many more factors that are unnatural to the way the dog or puppy evolved.
Puppy classes are not the only way to help train your puppy. You should attend puppy socialisation classes and also make your own visits and meetings with other puppies and dogs.
If you feel that your dog is the only one at fault, you must be aware that your success in training attempts will be limited. A one-to-one dog trainer can easily take your dog and help it to behave more acceptably - canine behaviour is based on learning and reward, positive or negative.
However if the dog trainer, puppy trainer, dog whisperer, or dog behaviourist then hands the dog or puppy back to the owner, they will not know how to handle the puppy or dog that is being trained. This means that the puppy or dog being trained will quickly revert back to their state before the dog training occurred!
This situation means that dog training and puppy trainers should work hand in hand with the dog and the owner who is also being trained! Where there is a dog problem behaviour, it is likely that the problem behaviour, perhaps protective aggression, fear aggression, possessive aggression, separation anxiety, barking, chewing scratching and most of all lead pulling can all stem from what the dog has learned so far.
The owner must also be keen to learn!
The Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors APBC are an organisation specialising in dog behaviour where all cases are seen on Veterinary referral. If your dog has a behaviour problem you must ask your Vet to refer your case directly to me.
